Sophie B. Bis

Sophie B. Bis 98, of Fiske Ave. Cumberland passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2011
at Oak Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Born in South Bellingham, Massachusetts, she was the
daughter of the late Francis M. and Louisa I. (Nowak) Bis. She was a graduate of Franklin high School
and the former Hill College. She later served on the Board of Directors of that College. Sophie was a
communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Woonsocket. She was employed as a bookkeeper
in the office of the S. S. Kresge Co. in Woonsocket. Later, she accepted a position as Eastern Regional Office
Supervisor for the K-Mart Corporation. In this position, Ms. Bis traveled throughout the United States.
She was employed at K-Mart for over 50 years. After retirement, she volunteered for the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program (RSVP) where she served as Secretary and President. Sophie also assisted the elderly
with income tax preparation, served as a teacher's aide at the Msgr. Gadoury School, and helped with
the Meals on Wheels Program. In 1998, she was honored by RSVP for her many years of outstanding volunteer service to children, and the elderly, and others in need. During World War II . she was a 1st.
Lieutenant with the American Red Cross Ambulance Motor Corps. Sophie is survived by a sister
Rosalie C. Slowick and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late John F. Bis,
Michael J. Bis and Mary A. Kobylarz. Her Funeral will be Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 9:30 A.M.
from the Kubaska Funeral Home, 33 Harris Ave. Woonsocket with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M.
at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church Harris Ave. Woonsocket, Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Blackstone, MA. Relatives and Friends are invited. Visitation hours are Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M.
